The glass on its side

An upturned or sideways glass cannot hold anything until it is upright, and no amount of careful pouring fixes that. The trick is to treat the line as a weight rather than a channel: a short, thick stroke drawn on the raised lip of the glass drops onto it and levers it upright. Then, and only then, worry about the water.

Leaks and holes

Some glasses have a chip in the side, and some floors have a gap between the stream and the glass. Both want a plug, which is the cheapest line in the game: a small horizontal stroke placed just above the hole, released so it falls into place. Long ramps here are a waste of ink because the water is already going the right way.

Seesaws and pivots

A platform that pivots will dump whatever lands on the heavier side. You can use that: a line drawn on the far end of a seesaw tips it so the stream slides towards the glass. Or you can defeat it by drawing a stub under the light end to lock it level. Which is cheaper depends on where the glass sits, so watch the platform swing before choosing.

Moving parts

Spinning wheels and sliding walls are timing levels in disguise. The water pours for long enough that you can wait for the obstacle to be clear, then draw. Trying to build a line that survives every position of the obstacle is almost always over budget.

Two strokes are allowed

Nothing says the solution has to be one line. Two small strokes — one to tip, one to catch — regularly cost less ink than a single long one that tries to do both.
